SAP COLOR PROJECT
After acquiring BusinessObjects, SAP found that, according to the [high-up-in-the-org-chart-person], the sequence of chart colors they'd inherited "make my eyes burn".
We were asked to develop a revised sequence of colors that did not require sunglasses.
The crux of the matter lies in the visual separation of neighboring colors in a more appealing way.
We equated color sequences to music: they were like melodies or chords, like music, color 'note' combinations could possess 'dissonance' or 'harmony'. SAP's palette was dissonant - but how to achieve harmony?
Shown here is an excerpt from our research and recommendations for a palette. The test charts were deliberately complex and difficult to read so as to better test how well the colors read.
